Meet Gerry
My wife Jan and I moved to Barrie so that we could enjoy more family time with our two terrific sons, Bill and Steve, our wonderful daughter-in-laws Tara and Angie, and our five awesome grandchildren all of whom call Barrie home. Three generations of family living in Barrie has allowed us more time to connect, enjoy more Sunday dinners, more time at ball fields, hockey rinks, and playgrounds. We can share that being in Barrie is better!
I enjoyed a successful career in telecommunications, rising through the cable television ranks from a pole climbing lineman to the vice president level. I am accustomed to managing large staff complements and budgets that run in the 10s of millions.
Jan and I ran our own small business and know firsthand the pressures business owners face.
While I have great experience in municipal politics, I am not a politician by any definition. My business background drives my decision-making processes and how I approach the mayors' role.
In my previous roles as Mayor of the Town of Penetanguishene and Simcoe County Warden, I successfully focused on controlling taxes, driving economic growth and investing in infrastructure.
As our local Warden, I chaired the Western Ontario Wardens Caucus which as a collective group represented 3.5 million people residing in 322 communities. I sat on the board of Directors for the Association of Ontario Municipalities and was Board Chair for SWIFT (Southwestern Ontario Integrated
Fibre Technology).
Due to my economic development efforts which included pursuing the Amazon HQ2 opportunity and my successful pursuit of $180 million dollars in funding for SWIFT I was the recipient of the 2016 Ontario Community Influencer of the Year award.
I have a strong track record of success on important local issues, including improving transportation, expanding transit, driving the economy, supporting affordable housing, tourism and health care.
